Our extraction Process

We have spent many hours researching and tailoring our extraction process for each mushroom. We are always striving to bring you the highest quality extracts by utilizing the most up to date research.

Every bottle is crafted in small batches, with love and intention.

Start at the Source

Fruiting Bodies only

When is comes to high quality mushroom products, you want ones that utilize only the mushroom fruiting bodies.

While mycelium can behold beneficial compounds, the methods of growing mycelium inherently create a diluted product. This is because mycelium is typically grown on grain which it cannot be seperated from. So, many companies sell you a product that is mostly grain with very little mycelium, and it may not even be extracted!

At Syzygy Mushrooms, we ensure that only fruiting bodies are used for our extracts to create the most potent products possible.

Dual-Solvent Extraction

Organic Ethanol and Distilled Water

Mushrooms have a variety of compounds such as beta-glucans, terpenes, phenolic compounds, and oils. All of these vary in their solubility in water versus ethanol. It is therefore important to utilize both in the extraction of mushrooms.

We use a dual solvent extraction method for all of our mushrooms. This means that we use a mixture of organic grain ethanol and distilled water together in our ultrasonic extraction.

We believe this provides a potent, full spectrum extraction. We don't aim to maximize any single compound in our extracts, but rather we seek to extract a broad range of compounds for a synergistic effect.

Ultimate Bio-availability

Ultrasonic Extraction

Mushroom cell walls are made predominately of a compound called chitin. This polysaccharide is the same component that makes up the shell of a crab or lobster. You might be able to see how this would be difficult for the human stomach to digest. Because of this, we need to utilize a method of breaking down these cell walls to make the bio-active compounds available for your body to utilize.

Traditionally this has been done using hot water and a prolonged alcohol soak for extraction. While heat might increase the bioavailability of some beneficial compounds, it comes at the detriment of others. In order to preserve all compounds and create a full spectrum extract, we utilize the mechanical power of an ultrasonic probe.

Ultrasonic probes generate low frequency sound waves that create an effect called cavitation - the violent formation and collapse of microscopic bubbles. This violent implosion ruptures the cell walls of the mushrooms and allows for its contents to be pulled out into our dual solvent. All without excessive heat.

Not only does this method showed markedly higher efficacy, it also allows for less energy and solvent use, allowing for more eco-friendly operation.

Concentration and Standardization

Final Steps

Lastly, we use some final steps to remove the alcohol and concentrate the extract. Our procedure allows us to know exactly how much of the total extracted compounds go into each bottle giving you consistent dosing.

Alcohol-Free

Glycerin-based

Glycerin is a naturally occurring sugar alcohol found in plants and animals. Ours is derived from organic coconuts and vegetables.

We use it in place of alcohol as a preservative because we feel alcohol instills a harsh and undesirable taste. Plus, we want our tinctures to be accessible to those who refrain from alcohol for health and religious purposes. Instead, glycerin adds a pleasant sweetness to our earthy and mushroomy tasting tinctures. Notably, glycerin does not raise blood sugar like glucose or other simple sugars.

It preserves via its hygroscopic properties. It binds to water molecules reducing water's activity which is required by microbes to grow.

Violet Glass

Miron Glass Bottles

What's the use of creating a potent product if you're going to store it in a manner which degrades it?

For this reason, we utilize Miron Violet Glass for all of our tinctures. Violet glass blocks out all damaging wavelengths of light while allowing UV and infared light which are beneficial to botanical compounds. This ensures our products stay potent and active.
